it would be great if vlc could display subtitles from two sources (files/channels) at the same time. this would allow for learning languages as well as a convenient way for watching a movie for different language-speaking spectators. /joe

We are working on it. It will be handled through a LUA extension.

But seriously, this should be regarded as an essential feature, not part of 'Features Paradize'. And it has been in the backlog an awfully long time...
I can't wait to test it (Win XP). A hotkey to turn on the 2-nd subtitle and cycle through available subtitles is sufficient. Perhaps later it could be improved: VLC menu options, position, font, encoding, colour, changes on-the-fly, ...
While implementing the secondary subtitles support, please check how the code is ready for possible improvements of related text-to-speech renderer for subtitles in the future (sub source: (disabled/)primary/secondary; visibility: show/hide; speed; volume). Perhaps you could define som hints for easier improvements without massive rework of currently being implemented code.
