VLC media player does not respect default audio language settings

Every time I play the movie MayaBasicsMovie.mov that comes with Autodesk Maya 2013, the audio language is Chinese or something like that. All attempts to change this behaviour in the preferences dialogs (English, en, EN) did not have the desired result.

This is the command issued by Maya: "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --started-from-file "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2013\movies\quickStart\MayaBasicsMovie.mov"

First of all, the preferences settings to only accept ISO codes. So putting something like "English" will not work.

Second, your movie's audio tracks need to have an ISO tag for this work. If there's none, but just Track 1, 2, 3, you're doomed.

Thirdly, you are not supposed to use VLC this way. To select the audio track of a current file, have a look at the Audio menu, which lets you change the track at runtime and also see if there's actually a non-Chinese track available.
