Performance decrease and high CPU usage
Compared to VLC 1.1.11, VLC 2.0 RC1 uses significantly more CPU ressources on my system (Intel Atom N270, 1.6GHz). This increased ressource usage by VLC 2.0 RC1 causes some files that I could play fine in VLC 1.1.11 to become rather unwatchable in VLC 2.0 RC1 (frame freezes or visible artifacts every few seconds). This anime fansub would be an example: http://www.nyaa.eu/?page=torrentinfo&tid=277556
Find attached my exemplary observation for MP3 playback. The Atom N270 is a single-core processor with hyper-threading. It is shown as two CPUs by the Windows task manager because of that latter feature, I guess, so it would appear that it actually shows threads. The red line should show kernel time.
You can see 2.5 minutes of MP3 playback in VLC 1.1.11 in the area numbered "1" followed by 1 idle minute followed by another 2.5 minutes of MP3 playback in the area numbered "2", this time in VLC 2.0 RC1. Shown CPU usage in the first area (VLC 1.1.11) was about 7 per cent, 1 per cent when idle and around 35 per cent in the second area (VLC 2.0 RC1).
