VLC for win64 crashes at startup (also in vlc-cache-gen.exe)

VLC 1.3.0-git-2011 12 01-0102 is crashing on install. When it opens the vlc-cache-gen.exe into the console it just crashes on my Windowsn 7 64-bit. I close the window that appears after a crash and it continues to install further but after the installation I can't start VLC. I deleted my older VLC 1.11 and this one and tried again, the same result.

I checked if VLC 1.2.0-git installs ok and it does...

I think VLC 1.3.0-git-2011 12 01-0102 is a 64bit version, and I recently have been not able to run Windows 64bit builds too.

I'm am also having this exact problem. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64bit.

Can you run it from VLC install directory and get a backtrace?

Also which version of VLC are you using?

32 bits? 64 bits?

Nightly build? which version/date ?

I'm running the 64bits.

The last nightly build I could get to work was vlc-1.2.0-pre1-20111122-0104-win32. I've tried almost all the 1.3.0 including the latest build vlc-1.3.0-git-20111214-0104-win32.

All of them have the same problem as described in the description. The VLC cache crashes but continues to install. After the install VLC will not open.

It crashes since upgrade to 2.0.1 runtime in debian sid

asprintf() in mingw-64 was broken

backported r4697 and r4695 into debian package on altair fixes the crashes, but VLC still fails to run with some weird string corruption seen in vlc / vlc-cache-gen output (causing no modules found for example)

now rebuilding full contribs to be sure everything's correct

mingw64 still broken.

Workaround: comment (v)asprintf definition in mingw-w64 stdio.h , so our replacement is used.

http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win64/trunk-20111221-0825/ should work, I'll try various things on altair, so next nightlies might stop and start working again.
