need *working* support for playback of MIDI files in 1.18
when I play any .mid file, I get the following:
MIDI synthesis not set up: A sound font file (.SF2) is required for MIDI synthesis. Please install a sound font and configure it from the VLC preferences (Codecs / Audio / FluidSynth).
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "MIDI". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this. for an XG soundfont. basically you are looking for a GM soundfont in .sf2 format or a yamaha XG soundfont in .sf2 format.
what I DON'T know (there's nothing in prefs), is how to configure FluidSynth with a given SoundFont.
someone in another bug post complained about bad sounds from MIDI. but I am saying now there is no MIDI support at all, and I would like this, he just chose a song that was originally mapped to funny instruments for some other synthesizer, or he chose the wrong soundfont.
MIDI just picks an instrument number for a channel, and sends note numbers and control parameters to the various 16 MIDI channels. What Insrument library you use is up to you. MOST songs are written for GM (General MIDI), and some are written for Yamaha XG which is a huge extension of GM.

no "duh" here. the error message is totally inappropriate for windows, as there is in prefs the "Audio" and "Input & Codecs" major sections, and neither of them contain ANY reference to FluidSynth.
in the area that you COULD view plugins/codecs as a tree, there are no settings.
so I am stuck getting nowhere. somebody ripped something out.
On Windows and Linux, it's in: Tools -> Preferences -> All -> "Input / Codecs" -> "Audio codecs" -> FluidSynth -> "Sound fonts". This is pretty obvious from what the text says, which is preferences -> Codecs -> Audio -> FluidSynth -> sound font.
If you want something easier, you're more than welcome to provide a MIDI synthetizer library that does not need a sound font. But yeah, it will sound terrible, like FM synthetizers of the 90's.
do you think you could put that text inside the windows version instead of the linux text (since it's different for this platform)? it should be a minor change and it wouldn't leave people like me confused.
and you are right, this new method works. I tested it with some soundfonts I had just downloaded yesterday.

I don't know what you are talking about. I don't see anything like that anywhere. this is 1.18 (oops - 1.19 I just double-checked). there is no "Codecs" in preferences, only "Input & Codecs", both in Show Settings:Simple and All views.
in the Simple view, fluidsynth is not available, neither in "Audio" nor in "Input & Codecs".
I can only access it, as you said, via "All". this is not in VLC's error message for windows, it gives something inappropriate.
if you are using a debug version that shows extra stuff, or an SVN, that might explain it. mine doesn't look like that, and I download mine (the production release version) simply from videolan.org from the regular VLC download area for windows. no need to get into an argument over this.
#ifdefs can do interesting things with #ifdef DEBUG... sometimes unintended things - I have had a few experiences with those in my own code in my own programs.
