I have never said that it is valid (indeed I have set the ticket to enhancement), I have only said the VLC should replace spaces with %0.9.x maintenance before checking the validity of the URL like browsers do.

We have vlc_uri_fixup() for this already.

It is true that every browser I tested can fix up the wrong URL (Gnome Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome). I don't see why VLC could not do it.

I think it's against VLC's credo: "plays everything", even things that doesn't respect a specification.

Could we let the TC vote on that issue?

Vote on what? This bug report is 11 years old. Nowadays, we already have a function to do this, and it's already used, e.g. to parse semi-broken playlist files.

It's not used by http modules. I will propose a fix.

I propose to handle it at the interface level, when we receive input from the user.

This little UX oversight makes it really frustrating to open a network file in VLC when there are a lot of spaces in the filepath.

I'm a bit disheartened to see this trac was opened 11 years ago and still hasn't been fixed. Glimpse of hope with the latest development being 10 months old but... Can we get a fix for this?!

@tguillem I've done this in !510 (merged) (for macOS) and !512 (merged) (for Qt), I guess this is along the lines what you had in mind for how to solve this?
