VLC 3.0.0 regression - RC socket is not created

Hi!
I had VLC 2.2.8 32 bit - rc interface through socket worked, in place installed VLC 3.0.0 bit - it is not working anymore.

Example command line:
vlc.exe --extraintf rc --rc-host localhost:8811

Socket is not created in VLC 3. In Process Explorer, vlc.exe properties, under TCP/IP no sockets. In VLC 2 socket is created with LISTENING status. Firewall is not a problem.

Beside installable versions, also checked:

No change in this behaviour after using "VLC media player - reset preferences and cache files".
All versions of VLC 3 checked also with "portable" folder in them (vlc.exe double-clicked, "portable" folder populated by default settings).

Also checked with QT preferences window. Main interfaces > additional interfaces: oldrc; under RC, TCP parameter: "localhost:8811". After saving, again opened preferences has blank TCP parameter. Tried with and without restarting, in all versions (even 2.2.8), socket is not created and host/port not saved.

I am using this feature to control VLC with some out of QT interface interactions. My Python script can not work when VLC is not creating a socket.
OS: Windows 7 64 bit.

Please fix this or give me a new way of doing this.

My OS is Windows 10 home, 64bit. My proof testing is with PuTTY.

The working version (2.2.6 installed):

The non-working version (3.0.0; not installed; run from a local directory):

Hi! I created duplicate ticket for this one, so below is a copy.

RC interface with TCP command input is not creating socket.

vlc-2.2.8-win32.7z - Creates socket.\ vlc-3.0.0-win32.7z, vlc-3.0.0-win64.7z, vlc-3.0.1-20180225-0303-win32.7z, vlc-4.0.0-20180225-0302-dev-win32.7z - Do not.

All VLC settings are default. OS: Windows 7 SP1 64 bit.

Attached log file, here is command line:\ vlc --file-logging --logfile=E:\vlc3\log.txt --log-verbose=2 --extraintf rc --rc-host localhost:8811\ But that command line:\ vlc --file-logging --logfile=E:\vlc3\log2.txt --log-verbose=2 -I rc --rc-host localhost:8811\ Gives almost same log, except, every time log is cut in line 56 with ending text "lua debug: Tr".

Old RC has been unmaintained for over ten years though.

Rémi Denis-Courmont: Since OldRC is not being maintained any longer (from your comment), is there a more current interface I could/should be using to do the things I want (i.e. control and query the player via a socket). I'm certainly willing to do the 1-time work to a more appropriate interface for the future as long as I can still do what I need.

I'm currently using the following text commands from my app: pause get_title get_time seek clear quit key key-vol-mute

So that's the equivalent functionality I'd need in whatever I switched to.

Nominally, Lua RC replaced old RC with mostly the same functionality. (Emphasis on mostly).

Which are the calls that are missing?

Following, also using OldRC with a similar list of commands.

Unfortunately the "seek" command is now causing VLC to crash in all v3.0.x versions with a run time exception (I'm on Win 7) and I can't locate the crashdump file to even report it (nothing in the log, it just truncates at the time of crash).

Filed separate seek command crash as issue #20123 (closed).

Given this issue I filed and the separate one on 'seek' crashes that are both said to be fixed in 3.0.2, wondering when that point version is going to be released. It's been at 3.0.1 for win64 on the videolan website for quite some time now.
