When playing a video file, and then recording part of that file, the new file created is "wrong"
When I am playing a, let's say, 60 minute video file, and I want to keep just 30 seconds of it, I click the Red Record button to keep just the part I want. So a new file with just the 30 seconds I want is created, and I can delete the 60 minute file bc I only want those 30 seconds.
I have been using VLC this way for years and it works great. But, within the last month, all of a sudden, when I go to record that 30 second clip, the output doesn't work how it should. Now, when I go to play the newly created 30 second clip, the beginning 5 to 10 seconds is just audio, no video...and then the video shows up, but there is no audio. On longer clips of 2-3 minutes, there is enough "catch up" time for the file to go from just audio, then just video, then about 30 to 40 seconds in, both the audio and video appear and the file works fine. I have just not been able to both see and hear the first 30 seconds of the clip. On a 30 second file, there simply isn't enough time to go through the just audio, then just video, then both. I really just hear the audio and then the file stops.
I used to use VLC the same way on both my laptop AND my PC...but for some reason I had this same recording output problem on my laptop about 2 years ago and couldn't make good recordings, so I could only get recordings on my PC. That wasn't ideal, but it was fine. I tried 2 years ago to fix the issue with VLC on my laptop, but I could not find a solution. When I saw that the same thing started happening on my PC, I recognized the problem bc I had had it before on my laptop. So, I have searched this forum, and googled the heck out of it the last few days, and I can't seem to find a resolution to this particular problem. I can't even find where it is addressed anywhere.
I usually have about 10 or so clips from a 60 minute video that I want to keep. Some are 30 seconds long, others may be 2 to 3 minutes long. When I play files that have this issue, on the shorter ones, the length of the video doesn't show up when I play the file in VLC. Usually if its a 30 second file, I can see that it's 30 seconds. On these recordings that come out wrong, there is no time.
I have tried playing the files in windows media player and other media players, and the issue is the same...so it has to do with the recording of the file using VLC. (I looked for other media players that offer the ability to make recordings, and I can't find any. I really don't want to not use VLC. I love everything about it. But I don't even know if there is another player that I could make recordings of a recording.
This is not an intermittent problem. VLC either records with no problems, or every recording is bad. So once this started happening, every recorded file is like this. It doesn't work on some and not others. The recorded output file is wrong in the same manner on every one.
The issue with my PC...I have 2.2.8 Weatherwax. My laptop has 2.2.6 Umbrella, but when I go to check for updates, it says that I have the most up to date. I downloaded the 2.2.8, and still have the same issue.
I am attaching a file that I would play in VLC, then also 3 output files. One from my PC using VLC 2.2.8. One from my laptop, VLC 2.2.6, and then another from my laptop after going to VLC 2.2.8.
I am also including a file from Colbert that shows what the output file comes out. It is longer, so you can see the audio, video issue. If you just let it play, or even skip ahead, you can see it not work, and then towards the end, actually work fine.
I am following the reporting bug wiki page as best I can. I looked for the problem and solution, and tried a handful of things, but nothing worked. Yes, I have reset preferences. I have updated VLC. I have completely uninstalled it, and then installed the most up to date version. same issue. My PC where the issue just started happening. Windows 7 home premium. Lenovo.6 GB Ram. 64 bit OS. Intel premium G620 @ 2.60 GHZ
My laptop where the issue started 2 or so years ago that I just sort of left for dead and just did recordings from my PC. Windows 10 home. Lenovo 6 GB Ram. 64 bit OS. Intel(R) Core (TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20 GHz
It does not happen sporadically. Once it starts, it doesn't stop. The codec of the file i attached is MPEG audio layer 1/2 mpga. MPEG-1/2 video (mpgv). My biggest issue is that this started happening, all of a sudden. I didn't update anything or change any settings. One day it worked fine, and then the next, it didn't. I could not pinpoint the problem with my laptop 2 years ago, and can't now that the same issue has happened on my PC.
If this can be fixed, I will absolutely donate. Not that that should sway VLC in any way...bc this program has allowed me to make my own greatest hits to share with friends and for my own personal use, that I have absolutely gotten more value from this program than most many others. (I couldn't and wouldn't want to watch any videos any other way than with VLC. Volume up and down with the mouse, speed up or slow down with the bracket buttons, and the ability to record make VLC indispensable)
