Duplicate filenames in iOS VLC App

I've stared at this problem for hours trying to figure out a pattern on why the duplication is occurring. I think I've figured it out, but it make no sense to me. Here's my observation...

In the IOS VLC app I only see duplicate filenames when the filename of the video contains certain Cyrillic characters. Specifically the Й / й and/or the Ё / ё Cyrillic characters.

For example, a filename of "Ратмир и Серж - Девчёнка.mp4" will produce duplicates because of the ё in the filename. Likewise a filename of "Сергей Лазарев 7 цифр.mp4" produces a duplicate as well because of the й in the filename.

If I rename the filenames - omitting the ё or й Cyrillic characters, and resynchronize using iTunes, the duplicates disappear.

I read a couple of threads in the iOS VLC App forum where a handful of people had similar issues, and it looks like the commonality between the titles reported in the thread seems to be a semicolon or a question mark being used in the title. Something is going on with special characters tripping up the VLC app whether it's the English semicolon / question mark or the Cyrillic Ё / Й.

Operating Environment

-iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB

-IOS 11.0.1

-VLC 2.8.3 (283.2)

-iTunes 12.7.0.166

-Video file formats - .mp4 only

when does the duplication appear exactly ? I've been trying to reproduce it a couple of times as well. I've done a screenrecording and a recording of my phone to make sure I'm doing exactly what you're doing. Do I need to wait longer or do something differently ?

I apologize for not getting back to this sooner. I got completely buried in work this past week.

In any event here are the steps I'm taking when I see the duplication of file names...

1. Connect my iPhone 7 Plus (iOS 11.0.1) via cable to my PC (version Windows 10).
2. Launch iTunes (version 12.7.0.166).
3. In iTunes click on the "Phone" icon on the tool bar to display my iPhone Sync Settings.
4. On the left side of the screen, click on "File Sharing" under Settings.
5. In the main part of the screen select "VLC" under Apps.
6. The VLC Documents pane is now visible with an "Add File..." button at the bottom.
7. I click on the "Add File..." button and select two files for this example and click the "Open" button on the file selection window. The two files I've selected are... a. Группа Дмитрий Дейнеко - Бунтарь.mp4 b. Бумер 2.mp4
8. iTunes starts the transfer process to my iPhone and after a few moments the files are displayed in the VLC Documents pane.
9. Lastly, I click Done at the bottom of the iTunes screen which closes the iPhone Sync Settings, and then disconnect my iPhone from my PC.

Moving to the iPhone...

1. When I open the VLC App (version 2.8.3 (283.2)) on my iPhone for the first time, I see two files listed as I would expect. See "iPhone Screenshot 01".
2. When I close the VLC App, and then reopen it, I see a duplication of filename "A". See "iPhone Screenshot 02".
3. In a nutshell each time I close the VLC App and then open it again, I get and additional duplication for filename "A". See "iPhone Screenshot 03".

When I connect my iPhone back to iTunes and take a look at the VLC Documents pane, I only see two files listed even though I see the duplicates on my iPhone. See "iTunes Screenshot 01"

As I mentioned in my original post, the duplication of file names inside of the app only happens when certain characters are in the file name. In my case they are the Cyrillic characters Й / й and/or the Ё / ё. As you can see in the example I went through above, filename "A" uses the one of these characters, while filename "B" does not.

Yes this information is very helpful especially since you mention a problem with unicode. I just have trouble reproducing it and you're not the first one reporting this issue.

As you can see in the two videos that I've provided that I've done the same thing. I just dragged and dropped the video in. My filename is Ратмир и Серж - Девчёнка.mp4. So I retried via adding instead of dragging and also closing the app and reopening the app and I still can't see the duplication here :(

We finally found the issue. Thank you so much for the detailed description a fix will come with the next Version!
