Description
After upgrading from debian jessie to debian stretch, VLC no longer fills the entire window in i3. If the video is of higher resolution than the containing window, the video is cropped. If the video is lower resolution than the containing window, the video is placed in the top right corner, and the remaining space contains a frozen image of what was on the screen previously (like the VLC interface or another window).

This only happens when playing a video. Opening a VLC instance with no video playing or only an audio feed does not cause any issues. Also, if I make the window floating in i3, the video works fine. If it wasn't for this I would suspect it was an i3 issue instead.
Current versions of VLC and i3:
$ vlc --version VLC media player 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett (Weatherwax) (revision 2.2.1-0-ga425c42) VLC version 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett (Weatherwax) (2.2.1-0-ga425c42) Compiled by buildd on brahms.debian.org (Jun 10 2015 05:39:00) Compiler: gcc version 4.9.2 (Debian 4.9.2-20) This program comes with NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law. Previous version of VLC was 2.2.0~rc2-2 and i3wm 4.8-2, both in debian jessie.

Or a Nouveau bug. Can you try with the plain dumb X11 video output?

I tried switching from automatic to both XVideo and X11 output modules, the issue persisted.

feels like a Qt5 bug.
