#2355 real codec doesn't initialize courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

realvideo error: Cannot Init real decoder library

#2366 realloc is generally used incorrectly ivoire defect new low Unknown
Description

most but not all uses of realloc() in vlc are incorrect.

one correct instance: npolibvlc.cpp 1694 char moreOptions = (char )realloc(options, capacity*sizeof(char*)); 1695 if( ! moreOptions ) 1696 { 1697 /* failed to allocate more memory */ 1698 free(s); 1699 /* return what we got so far */ 1700 *i_options = nOptions; 1701 *ppsz_options = options; 1702 return; 1703 }

note that it doesn't do: foo = realloc(foo, size); because then it wouldn't be able to clean up foo when realloc fails.

while i'm at it, there's no need to do: if (foo) x=realloc(foo, size); else x=malloc(foo, size); realloc(0, size) will do the right thing.

oh, one more thing: libs/loader/win32.c 498 static void* my_realloc(void* memory, int size) 499 { 500 void *ans = memory; 501 int osize; 502 if (memory == NULL) 503 return my_mreq(size, 0); 504 osize = my_size(memory); 505 if (osize < size) 506 { 507 ans = my_mreq(size, 0); 508 memcpy(ans, memory, osize); 509 my_release(memory);

you forgot to alloc check my_mreq, so you crash at 508

#2371 Fullscreen on Windows7 courmisch defect closed low Unknown
Description

I use windows 7 on a notebook with an additional monitor attached to it. If I drag the vlc window to the secondary monitor and double-click on the video, it plays it full-screen, but ont the primary monitor. I am using windows 7 build 6956 and VLC 0.9.8a.

Hope that helps.

#2395 Any "Open" dialog makes VLC freeze for at least 10 seconds courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

On VLC > Media, any "Open" dialog makes VLC use 90% CPU and freeze for at least 10 seconds, then the dialog appears. It happens only for the first dialog opening. Any further dialog opening is ok, doesn't freeze and takes about half a second.

To reproduce the bug:

  1. Open VLC.
  2. On the "Media" menu, click on any choice:

Open File... Open Directory... Open Disc... Open Network... Open Capture Device... Convert / Save... Streaming...

More info: VLC 0.9.4 with reset preferences Ubuntu 8.10 Gnome 2.24.1

it actually started to happen after 0.9.8 (there were no such bug on 0.9.6) when you use extended desktop mode on multiple monitors and drag your player window to the designated window and fullscreen the playing movie, it fullscreens the movie back to primary monitor... (it used to fullscreen the movie on the monitor that it was playing, as it should)

#2524 AC3 audio doesn't work properly inside MP4 container. courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

As reported in: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?p=184974#p184974

AC3 audio inside MP4 container doesn't work properly in VLC. There are two issues:

  1. You cannot select SPDIF output for AC3 audio if it is inside MP4 container.
  1. Channel mappings are wrong when AC3 is inside MP4.

Sample file available in: http://public.me.com/dan_isaacs and another sample in http://www.dvbportal.com/ts/Heroes.S3E2.6CH.HD-sample.m4v (on both videos AAC audio track is the first one and AC3 is the second one)

and some interesting discussion http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1211486#post1211486

Tested on 0.9.8a and vlc-git 1.0.0 20090211 under Win32.

Altough sufficient trying so far has resolved each occurrence, it might warrant investigation anyway as it might indicate overload. People with a ssh account on the target box apparently do not see the error.

#2688 Web Radio Subscription Playback Failure w/ VLC v0.9x courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

Kia Ora, When trying to open a 'token-ed' (not sure if right term) URL for an online stream, e.g. http://www.di.fm/listen/lounge/premium.pls?someKEYhere VLC attempts to play the link briefly, then stops.

Have tried using NB vlc-1.0.0-pre2-20090419-2354-win32, but same issue.

This URL works with vlc-0.8.6i, WMP9/10/11, QT, foobar2000, Winamp.

I have been advised this may be due to a change in the http access module.

I have attached both my debug logs from v0.9.9a & v1.0.0-pre2.

Cheers.

#2755 Video stuttering defect closed normal Unknown
Description

Ubuntu 9.04, 64bit, VLC 0.9.9a Grishenko.

The video playback is stuttering for me for almost every video playing, regardless of file format or video resolution. I have tried it with clean preferences. It is most noticable in fullscreen.

The stuttering occurs *exactly* every 30 seconds. The picture is standing still just for a half of a second, but it is noticable and unpleasant. I think there is some problem with buffering.

The problem is not present in other media players. The cpu usage is also not a problem and I have dual core.

This problem was not present in VLC 0.9.4.

How can I provide you with more specific information?

#2848 Some FLV videos cannot be transcoded courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

As reported in: http://forum.videolan.org/posting.php?mode=reply&f=14&t=60234#pr201111

There are some FLV files which cannot be properly transcoded to other formats. I tried to convert the sample FLV file to H.264 video AAC audio inside TS or MP4 container but on both times there was no video in output file.

I can convert AVI files without any issues. Tested with VLC 1.0.0-RC2 and 1.1.0 git-20090525-2206 under Win32.

#2849 Some FLV videos cannot be transcoded courmisch defect closed normal Unknown

Sample file: http://tinyurl.com/n4vdd8

#2969 YouTube playback doesn't work properly defect closed normal Unknown
Description

As reported in: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=56860&start=15#p206887

With VLC 1.0.0 some YouTube? videos cannot be properly watched anymore. Playback does start, but it stalls very soon. Same issue with VLC 1.1.0-git-20090707-2205. Tested under Win32.

Sample URL showing the issue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5U9gIr5aIyU&fmt=18

#3033 lazy use of NULL pointers causes segfaults on Solaris defect closed normal Unknown
Description

On Solaris, NULL pointers are not translated when used with printf; they cause segfaults. On Linux, %s results in "(null)". See also "Dealing with NULL Pointers" at http://developers.sun.com/solaris/articles/portingUNIXapps.html. Current workaround is to LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/0@….1 on Solaris.

One such place this can be fixed is in src/misc/messages.c, in the msg_StackMsg function. Above the return statement, check to see if p_ctx->psz_message is null, and if it is return "" instead. This particular instance was found when an invalid or unavailable URL was attempted in VLC. In addition, loading a playlist that has unreachable URLs results in a segfault, but I have not backtraced that one to a specific fix.

Marked difficulty hard since it probably involves extensive code review.

#3124 GPL IS NOT EULA defect closed normal Unknown
Description

PROBLEM

Thank you for the hard work with the software.

There is one problem: a dialog box is presented requiring to accept GPL license before the software can be installed. Please remove the dialog.

DETAILS

The installer asks to accept GPL: "You must accept the agreement to install VLC". The only button available to continue installation is [I agree].

The GPL is not a restrictive license, but a one, that gives rights. One of the fundamental rights is to install a nd use the software for any purpose. The dialog box is incorrect and cannot deny the right to install software.

From GPL: "Activities other than copying, distribution and modification are not covered by this License"

BACKGROUND

In GPL context, buttons like "I accept", "Agree" or "Do not accept", "Disagree" are invalid. It is not a requirement for end-user to accept anything about about the software released under GPL in order for him to be able to 1) install and 2) run ("to use") the software. In this regard GPL differs from Windows like EULAs; End user License agreements. The Windows EULAs typically place limits to use of the software whereas GPL is the opposite: it gives rights.

SOLUTION

In Windows binary software, the adviseable place to notify user about the softwatre license in under Windows prog ram's menu "Help > About". In the text displayed under "Help > About" there could be a link to the GPL site <http :www.gnu.org/licenses> for user to learn more about the license.

ARGUMENTATION

To help substantiate the point that the GPL is not an EULA, see GPL-2 license itself; section 0, para graph 2): <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.txt>

"Activities other than copying, distribution and modification are not covered by this License; they are outside i ts scope. The act of running the Program is not restricted, and the output from the Program is covered only if it s contents constitute a work based on the Program (independent of having been made by running the Program). Whether that is true depends on what the Program does."

#3129 VLC crashes on Snow Leopard when streaming on closing the connection feepk defect closed normal Unknown
Description

I start VLC to stream an mp3 file on my lan with

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC <filename> --sout='#standard{mux=raw,dst=<IP>:<port>/<name>.mp3,access=http}'

on a MacMini? running Snow Leopard 10.6.1. I can connect a client to this stream and listen for a while and everything works as expected until I cause the client to disconnect. At the same moment VLC crashes. Unfortunately, it does not leave a log in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter?/VLC* .

I tried VLC 1.0.3-rc 32 and 64bit. The bug can always be reproduced.

I don't experience crashes when running VLC on Leopard.

#3172 Incorrect displaying of cyrilic names courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

All VLC builds starting from October 5th, 2009 (1.0.3, 1.0.4 and 1.1.0) do not show Cyrillic names in m3u lists. VLC builds before (and including) October 4, 2009 showed Cyrillic w/o problems. E.g. vlc-1.0.3-git-20091004-0005-win32.exe worked correctly, vlc-1.0.3-git-20091005-0004-win32.exe became incorrect.

Description

As reported in: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=69717

There are certain WMV/ASF files that don't work correctly in VLC. Only small part of audio can be heard and no video is shown. They are created with Windows Videoimport and use VC-1 video codec and WMA 9.2 audio codec. Tested with VLC 1.0.3 and VLC 1.1.0-git-20091212-0003.

#3247 xdg-screensaver inhibiter always starts the screensaver at the end of a video jpeg defect closed normal Unknown
Description

With the xdg-screensaver "inhibit" module, my screensaver (actually I don't even have a screensaver) starts immediately at the end of a video. Even worse, the screensaver is not inhibited as it should be. This means that every 5 minutes my screen gets dark (the LCD panel stays on, but shows only dark pixels) while I'm watching a video.

I've looked into the code and found that xdg-screensaver is called with argument "suspend" or "resume". A call to "xdg-screensaver suspend" seems to have no effect, but a call to "xdg-screensaver resume" will always start the screensaver immediately (I tried that with other programs than VLC too). If the window tracked by xdg-screensaver is destroyed, the screensaver is started.

I fail to see how to fix this, as a call to xdg-screensaver suspend or resume will always end up with my screensaver to be started. This is probably because I don't even have a screensaver.

I'm running Archlinux + KDE4, without kscreensaver and without xscreensaver.

#3264 vlc emits a lot of whitespace to the console / command-line when playing any media file courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

Hi all!

vlc emits a lot of whitespace to the console / command-line when playing any media file. Every few seconds it emits many newlines to the stdout or stderr of the console. I'm on Mandriva Linux Cooker. I tried it with:

  1. A local .mp3.
  1. A local .ogg.
  1. A hand-compiled vlc from the source distribution (with no patches).
  1. A local .flv.
  1. A remote .flv.
  1. A remote .ogg such as:

http://www.shlomifish.org/Files/files/music/mp3-ogg/Austin%20Acton%20-%20Two%20Point%20Six.ogg .

  1. A new unix user account on top of IceWM.

I'm using the radeon/video-ati driver on an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro. Generally the vlc executable should be fully quiet on the invoking terminal.

Similar to 3268, VLC will begin using all available memory, both RAM and swap, until the kernel kills it automagically. Unfortunately, I have yet to get a backtrace, as by the time I realize it's a problem, the system is already in an unusable state.

#3930 Command-line prints Press enter to continue on native language with wrong encoding courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

As noticed in: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=79830

If one uses command vlc --help VLC will print "Dumped content to vlc-help.txt file." And after that text Press enter to continue on native language (like Paina Enteriä jatkaaksesi).

This is problematic on two ways:

  1. I have chosen VLC language as English, I don't want Finnish messages to be seen.
  2. Text uses wrong encoding so instead of Paina Enteriä jatkaaksesi it will show Paina Enteriõ jatkaaksesi...

If one tries to open file file://pöytäkone/elokuvat/Nikke%20Knatterton/02%20%20Freitags%20Immer.AVI VLC will say

main debug: creating demux: access='file' demux='' path='\\p??yt??kone\elokuvat\Nikke Knatterton\02 Freitags Immer.AVI'

so ä and ö letters aren't handled correctly which leads to

#4107 VLC hangs whenever arrow keys pressed defect closed normal Unknown
Description

OS: WIndows 7 Ultimate VLC Version: 1.1.3 (and 1.1.4, and 1.2.0) System: LG FX-series laptop, Intel Core2 CPU, Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset display adapter

Problem: Whenever I hit any arrow key in VLC, the program hangs - although it continues to play, it is otherwise frozen and Windows says it's "not responding". This includes trying to navigate through DVD menus and using Ctrl + Arrow to skip forward/backward (neither of which works). This happens with anything I try to play - avi files or DVDs (only files I have to test). I have tried installing 1.1.4 and 1.2.0 but the exact same problem persists. I have also deleted the config folder, as well as doing a complete uninstall and then reinstalling. I have also checked the hotkeys in Preferences, and the arrow keys don't seem to be mapped to anything other than navigation. This doesn't happen when I use version 1.0.5.

Logfile: I can't get vlc to produce a log or a crashdump because it doesn't crash, it just hangs.

#4131 VLC doesn't complete short MP3 sound samples courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

This happens on Windows 7 (VLC 1.1.4), Mac OS X 10.6.4 (VLC 1.1.3) and OpenSuse? 11.3 (VLC 1.1.2):

VLC starts to play short MP3 files but doesn't complete the playback. A similar ticket #1732 was closed as "wontfix" two years ago. The reason given there was:

This depends on how fast your computer is basically. VLC doesn't wait for your audiochain to be ready. If stuff is slow, you might miss something here and there. Some audio drivers have the same issue btw. (those who hibernate the soundcard for instance) It is >expected behaviour and will not change until after a major redesign of some parts of our core (for which there is a separate ticket).

All of my machines are pretty fast, so I can omit this reason in my case.

Other software I tried, doesn't cut the playback: Winamp, Windows Media Player, Amarok, Songbird to term some.

Please try this bug with the attached files.

#4149 VLC Player bugs courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

I am using VLC Player 1.1.4. Some Preferences don't work:

  • if "resize interface to video size" is unchecked, hotkeys for original size, double size, etc don't work.
  • "video width", "video height", "video X coordinate" and "video Y coordinate" don't work. If I move the window to another position, these coordinates shoul...d move the video window back to these coordinates on restart of VLC. If I resize the video, the width and height should return on VLC restart.

These bugs persisted through many versions. Hope VLC can fix them.

In the excitement of creating new features, developers should make sure that they don't render useless their old features and preferences or other parts of the software.

#4153 change to new streaming channel hung in dual monitors with different resolutions courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

When change to a new streaming under dual monitors (with difference resolutions, i.e. one in 1920 x 1080 and another one in 1024 x 768) environment, VLC hung.

  1. Show play list in monitor 1 (i.e. 1920 x 1080), a streaming is playing on monitor 2 (use full screen)
  1. click on a new streaming channel. VLC hung.

It seesm the VLC use the resoultion setting from monitor 1 to apply on the streaming output on monitor 2. This would be problem is two monitors has different resolution setting.

#4164 Random playlist not random courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

I don't know if this is just me, but it's reproducible. The random playlist is not being random, that is, it randomizes always in the same order. I think the seed for the random number generator is not being properly set.

To reproduce the bug: Open the playlist, drop some files in it, select random, play. Close VLC, start it over, repeat using the same files, and it'll randomize in the exact same order as before.

System is Windows 7, VLC ver 1.1.4

#4180 Playback of audio files concludes prematurely courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

Hi,

The attached MP3 file does not playback to completion on VLC 1.1.3 on Mac OS 10.6.4.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Load Attached audio file 2) Seek to 2:04 3) Commence playback

Intended result:

the final word heard should be "Hat".

Actual result:

Playback ceases before the word "hat" is heard.

Other notes:

The attached track is probably best avoided by Catholics or those offended by strong language.

#4203 1.1.4 video choppy. Lots of 'late picture skipped' errors courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

I am running VLC on a netbook-type device (Intel Atom N270, 1GB RAM, Intel 945GME, Ubuntu).

Since compiling 1.1.4 my video playback has become choppy and unwatchable. If I downgrade to 1.1.2 then everything is fine and smooth. Looking at the debug output I can see that 1.1.4 is generating a lot of this type of error message:

main video output warning: late picture skipped (15876 > -95)

The output of 1.1.2 does not have any of these error messages. Also, the CPU usage of X jumps up from 6% to 30% in 1.1.4.

I have captured the debug output of VLC in both conditions. Does anyone else experience a similar problem?

#4231 VLC 1.1.4 doesn't run with fench Orange WebTV devcie courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

Mandriva-Linux all versions Firefox versions 3.6 to beta 4.x VLC 1.1.2 and 1.1.4 (was working with 1.0.6 and previous)

Involved Mozilla VLC-Plugin in Firefox.

Since 1.1.2 and now 1.1.4, VLC doesn't open at all, when requested by (french) orange webTV device, on Firefox (all versions).

The "Orange" device, when playing on Firefox, isn't capable of opening/locating at all VLC!

I have noticed than, in fact, installing the VLC-plugin on the system, doesn't modify the file called "pluginreg.dat" in /home/~/.mozilla/firefox/~.default/ The path is then, impossible to be located by the device. The message issued by the device is : "Plugin : appplication/x-vlc-plugin) is unknown"

To reproduce just try (with Firefox) to play the TV device "WebTV" on "Orange.fr" french site, but you must be customer of Orange ADSL-TV and be registered on the site...

Anyway, finding why the installation of the plugin (mozilla-plugin-vlc) doesn't write/modify the path in the file "pluginreg.dat" will solutionate.

#4234 Reversed HSV color map courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

While doing some scientific simulations, I created an avi file showing the progression of the simulation. The avi was created by using MayaVi? in Windows (v. 1.5, the older version of MayaVi?) and automatically scrolling through the different steps. I then used CamStudio?, to do a video screen capture of the MayaVi? window.

The different vector orientations are represented by an HSV color map from blue to red. In Quicktime. The colors in the avi file display correctly, in VLC, including the nightly build as of Oct 5, 2010, the HSV map is reversed. I will try to attach the files to this ticket

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit

#4269 VLC not accepting update schedule command line options jb defect closed normal Unknown
Description

VLC is supposed to have the following command line options according to --help

--no-qt-updates-notif : Disables updates --qt-updates-days=x : Sets update check to every x days

However if VLC is started with these options, the preferences requested are just ignored.

To reproduce:

  • Install VLC
  • start "c:\program files\videolan\vlc\vlc.exe --no-qt-updates-notif"
  • check in menu tools->preferences whether updates are active or not
  • expected behavior is for them to be off, seen behavior is that they are still on

The same thing happens if "--qt-updates-days=10" is used

This has been tested in XP SP3 and 7 RTM

#4272 Xscreensaver plugin is never used courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

After fixing ticket:4271 xscreensaver plugin is still useless, as xdg-screensaver has higher priority and is always used regardless of the actual screensaver in use.

One way to fix this would be to check if the programs used (xdg-screensaver and xscreensaver-command) actually exist and fail the plugin if missing. But that can also pick the wrong one as xdg-screensaver command is distributed separately from the screensavers supporting it.

#4329 VLC hooks hardware system volume controls courmisch defect closed normal Unknown
Description

This is a bug that keeps popping back into existence, and I would love to show you the old bug report tickets, however, I can't seem to search on trac without getting errors. Basically, I have hardware buttons on my laptop that change the system volume, and VLC, when the active window, hooks those buttons for itself, preventing the operating system from receiving the system volume commands. If this is an intended feature, can it please be made optional as this functionality could be considered disruptive, and thus shouldn't be done without the user's permission. (This request is being made simply due to the fact that this bug keeps reappearing, and I wonder whether this functionality keeps occurring intentionally).
