I wrote a little plugin module that does this (see attachment). May be someone from VLC developers team will integrate it to project? I have tested it on Windows 7 x86 (VLC 2.0.3 x86).

Confirmed to work on openSUSE 12.2 (x86_64)

Plugin lib files should reside under /usr/lib64/vlc/plugins/

There are memory leaks and race conditions there. Someone should send a patch to the vlc-devel for review.

Plugin worked for me on 2.0.6 windows x64 but could someone please implement this :)? It's a sorely needed default or at least option. It's the only thing I would change with vlc.

How to add this feature on Mac? When will VLC include this feature by default? All other main players already have this simple feature!

This is an important feature to me. I want to keep using VLC. Everyone is telling me to just switch to another player. You see this advice everywhere on the forums. So I am sure VLC is losing a lot of users due to not having this feature.

I am sticking with VLC for now, but this feature is the single most important "problem" in VLC for me. I hope it gets a solution soon. Thanks!

I would like to try your plugin, but I can't get it to install on Ubuntu 12.04. I posted my issue here: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=108346#p395865

please add this feature. I think it's so useful in the vlc app. I don't want use plugin or extension it's too complicate for me.

i try vlcsrposplugin http://sourceforge.net/projects/vlcsrposplugin/ but it doesn't work on vlc 2.1.2 Please add this feature on the VLC official app ^^

By adding this if vlc crash you can remember last file position. It's also be very useful for audiobook.
