Miss-selects default audio stream (BBC HD, DVD multi-lingual narration)
Many video streams include multiple groups of audio streams. The user-interface and demuxers must make a decision about which stream to select by default. Frequently VLC makes a choice that differs to the default choice made by other decoding platforms.
Two recent examples that are known (although the problem applies more generally):
BBC HD (sky), "Top Gear: Polar Special" (English audio, English audio description)
Video 125 (DVD): "Eurostar Paris-London Waterloo" (English audio, French audio)
On multiple-audio BBC HD streams, the audio narration channel is selected and played by default in VLC, rather than the English audio channel. For the MPEG2 DVD, the secondary French track is selected and played by default.
I can provide short stream samples of both examples if required.
